O-Ring Size Search and Groove Calculations
This engineering calculator helps users identify published sealing-ring sizes from measured or nominal dimensions and review table-based groove recommendations for common sealing arrangements. Results can be displayed in metric or imperial units.
What You Can Calculate
- Search O-ring sizes using inside diameter and cross-section values.
- Compare measured dimensions with published nominal sizes and tolerances.
- Search standard O-ring designations and dimensions.
- Review groove recommendations for O-rings and X-Rings / Quad-Rings.
- Review compatible back-up ring dimensions where reference data is available.
- Switch between millimetres and inches.
How to Use the O-Ring Calculator
1. Select O-Ring, X-Ring / Quad-Ring or Back-Up Ring.
2. Choose Dimension Search or O-Ring Groove.
3. Select Measured / Custom or Standard Size.
4. Enter the requested dimensions or select a published designation.
5. Review the matching size, tolerance status and calculated recommendations.
Engineering Verification
This calculator provides table-based engineering guidance using published reference data. Results do not replace the current governing standard, supplier documentation or application-specific engineering evaluation. Always verify material compatibility, pressure, temperature, lubrication, surface finish, tolerances and operating conditions before finalising a seal or groove design.

Common Applications
This calculator can support preliminary seal selection and groove planning for:
- Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders
- Rod and piston sealing arrangements
- Static flange and face seals
- Pumps, valves and fluid-control components
- Industrial machinery and equipment
- Maintenance and replacement-part identification
- Technical quotations and engineering design reviews
Important Engineering Notice
The size matches and groove recommendations provided by this calculator are intended for preliminary engineering reference. They do not replace the current applicable sealing standard, supplier documentation, an approved technical drawing, project-specific requirements, application testing or professional engineering review.
Seal performance may be affected by elastomer compound and hardness, fluid compatibility, pressure, temperature, extrusion gap, squeeze, stretch, gland fill, surface finish, lubrication, operating speed, installation conditions and component tolerances.
Stepstone makes no warranty regarding the suitability of the calculated or matched values for a particular application. Users are responsible for verifying all seal dimensions, material requirements and groove specifications before making engineering, purchasing, maintenance or manufacturing decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can measured O-ring dimensions be used to identify a standard size?
Yes. The calculator compares the entered inside diameter and cross-section with published nominal dimensions and tolerances. Used, damaged, swollen or stretched O-rings may no longer represent their original dimensions, so the result should be verified against the application and supplier documentation.
Do the groove recommendations cover every sealing application?
No. The recommendations are table-based references for common piston, rod and face-sealing arrangements. High-pressure, vacuum, rotary, aggressive-media or unusual-temperature applications may require additional engineering analysis and specialist guidance.
Does the calculator confirm material compatibility?
No. Material selections such as NBR70 and FKM70 provide reference data only. Compatibility with the operating fluid, pressure, temperature and environmental conditions must be confirmed separately with the material or seal supplier.
